This presentation will cover human trafficking, generally, in the LGBTQ communities, and specifically in LGBTQ Latinx communities. Authored and presented by members of the Gender, Sexual and Romantic Minorities (GSRM) working at the National Human Trafficking Hotline, operated by Polaris. Polaris is a leading NGO in the anti-trafficking field, and the National Human Trafficking Hotline is one of the main sources for human trafficking data.

During the webinar, participants will:

  • Learn the basics of human trafficking
  • Learn about human trafficking in the LGBTQ Latinx communities by the numbers
  • Learn about qualitative aspects of human trafficking in the LGBTQ Latinx communities through case studies

Presenters:

Monica Short, Senior Hotline Advocate, Polaris - National Human Trafficking Hotline

Monica is a Senior Hotline Advocate at the National Human Trafficking Hotline and co-coordinator of the GSRM (Gender, Sexual and Romantic Minorities) working group. She earned her MS in Women's and Gender Studies with a concentration in health and sexuality from Towson University, and her BA in International Leadership Studies and Psychology from Marietta College. Previously Monica completed a graduate internship with the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and served as an AmeriCorps volunteer with High Rocks Academy working to empower youth in Appalachia.

Lynnsey O'Rourke, Hotline Supervisor, Polaris - National Human Trafficking Hotline

Lynnsey O’Rourke is a Hotline Supervisor at the National Human Trafficking Hotline. She has worked for Polaris since January 2017. Her prior work experience focuses on refugee and asylee resettlement in the United States. In 2016, she graduated from American University with a degree in International Studies with a concentration in Justice, Human Rights, and Ethics.
